How much water should we give trees?
The Arboricultural Associations recommends that young trees get at least 50 liters of water per week from May-August, for the first 3 years after planting.
I recommend we aim for 3 irrigations per tree per week = 60 liters.
1 irrigation slot = 2 watering cans = 20 liters.
Let’s aim for 60 liters of water per tree per week (3 irrigation slots)
Watering rota: here’s how it works

It looks like this:
- I have given each tree 3 irrigation slots. Each irrigation slot represents 20 liters (2 watering cans).
- Enter your name to claim an irrigation slot.
- Choose at least 2 trees if you can.
- Click the map link in the spreadsheet to see the tree’s location. Each tree is labelled with its distance from the nearest water point.
- Only sign up for as much as you feel able. 1 tree, 1 irrigation slot per week, is fine. Take into account distance.
- Our first goal is to have at least 1 name against each tree, with 1 irrigation slot (20 liters).
- Our stretch goal is to have 3 names against each tree. It could be the same person, or 2 or 3 different people.
- If all 3 irrigation slots are filled, that means the tree gets 60 liters every week.
